I just started a small community forum and it has really taken off. I think with community based forums word-of-mouth is the best way to build users.

It's definitely a labour of love, taking loads of perseverance to get it going well enough to not have to actively keep winding it up. Just started a new one, about search engines, and it's still not easy!

It is very hard. getting members that never come back, getting members who post a couple times, then dont post again for months. eh, its great when it finally gets going though

people don't realise how much work you have to put into a forum to get back from it.
starting is hell, trying to get members etc etc.
and to be honest what you get back money wise isn't worth it.
i do it because i enjoy running it (a bit of a hobby for me).

i think the only way you can really look at this is as a hobby. if you expect to make it big time, you'll be sorely disappointed.

That's for sure! If forums were to pay by the hour there'd have to be smaller coins!
