I know that there are heaps of sites around about this, but what do you consider to be effective methods of cooling your cpu? What do you use and why?

It depends on the processor, but I think they're called volcano - they are big chunks of copper that mate to the processor, using some good thermal grease, and a big fan.

Keeping the air moving in and through the case is important too.

Well my system gets pretty hot, here are the specs:
3.40 ghz P4 LGA775
2 x Seagate 120gb HD
Samsung DVDRW
Samsung DVDROM
1 gb DDR RAM
ATI X800

I've modelled the throughput of airflow through the computer, to create the most efficent flow of cold air being sucked in the front and side and hot air being blown out the back. I'm currently running 4 case fans, a Stock CPU fan and 2 fans on the power supply.

I'm currently saving for a CPU fan, but it is a sum up between a huge Fanless copper heatsink, or using a more discrete fan simliar to the stock standard.

Also it is a weigh up between Sound Pollution and Temperature. I can have all my fans going at full bore but I can hardly hear myself think. I'm thinking of getting a Fanless copper heatsink for the CPU, but weary about if it will be effective enough. THere are some good reviews around, but I'm still unsure.

Any suggestions?

Being a fluid dynamics buy, have you thought about the water cooling systems? IIRC, they only take one fan and should run quieter and give better results. Make sure you have it installed properly and maintain it. My brother set up one and didn't quite get the GPU sink on and fried his video card.

I have thought seriously about water-cooled units but I run my computer all the time, even when no-one is home. So when I'm out I'm always going to feel a bit apprehensive at the thought that liquid is flowing through my computer and no-one is home to keep a check on it. Imagine what would happen, if the cat jumped up knocked the reservoir over, water flows stops, melts down my computer, then water flows into the 4 multiboards sitting on the floor and house burns down. Arhh~ i prefer the less complicated alternative.

well i dont useany particular program
but you can follow a few simple mehods
close any programs that you dont
need
remeber even you minimise them they are running in the background
so if you are not using them you are better shut them down

There are a lot of people that believe shutting down when the computer isn't being used is the best thing to do.

hi guys

well i use a Vapochill LS gets me temps down to -9 and the actuall unit goes down to -50c which is cool. The reason i sue thse kind of cooling is to buy a cheap cpu that has a certain stepping and overclcok them to atleast 3gig
