I got tired of norton making me pay $20 per year to majorly slow down my computer, so I decided to try clamwin. So far, it seems good but does anyone have experience with it, good or bad?

I just started using it about a week ago - no problems so far.
Also, I've been using clamav on my mail servers for a couple of years now and the only problem has been keeping up with the updates. I have yet to see how clamwin is going to handle those kinds of updates - ie. do I need to reinstall a new version each time an engine update comes along???

Well speaking very quietly, I use Norton at home (a cracked version so i don't have to pay) It is definitely a memory sucker, but it's never done me wrong. At work we use "AVG Free Edition", which after using it I'm rather impressed. I just looked it up and after reading the fine print, it is illegally installed there because it is ment for non-commerical environment. I would say, it is everything the home user needs.

I didn't realize avg had a free version. I'll have to look again. I've heard their product is quite good.

Here is a site of a few different free antiviruses, with ratings and links to download. http://www.free-antivirus.ca/

Isn't MS supposed to be releasing an anti-virus program soon? They've bought like 2 companies now...

So, I had a chance to try clamwin on a really hosed computer (my parents') and it didn't do so well. It's scan speed is quite slow and I was left with a lot of question about whether it was actually doing anything.
I uninstalled it and installed AVG free and it's done well. I'm still going to have to reload their computer, this time with firefox, MSAS and AVG. I'll have to dig around for any other good config tips.

It seemed like it was working well, but my computer didn't have virus infections already.

Not to be an opera avocate or anything, but Opera will run faster than firefox. As it is considered the fastest browser.

That is true. I'll install both and let them choose.

I'm hopeful that clamwin will mature over time, but it's just not there yet IMO. I really like it for A/V filtering on my mail server, though.
