What's the story with anime?
« on: December 04, 2005, 08:27:12 am »
So, I have a few friends who are quite into the whole anime bit, but I have to say, I don't quite understand why.  Admittedly, I've never really sat down and watched much of it.

Well.......... I watch anime and I think it is really good. I watch a particular one called Gundam which has been running since 1979.

I think the appeal of Anime is that they tend to have very good storylines. Lots of people tend to think of Amine as Dragonball Z and Pokemon and all that kind of crap... but that stuff is really crap as it is aimed at kids.

I admittedly used to be never really into amine cos all I saw was the crap, that is shown on tv. But it wasn't until I saw a really good one, out of japan with fan subs that i realised that they actually are really good.

Also I must add... the people who do the translation from japanese to english normally screw up the story and highly censor it, i recommend watching Japanese ones with fan subs.

Very interesting.  That may explain why I thought they suck :)

Isn't gundam a big robotic body extension?  I learned that from the Matrix 3 :)

Well.... the Matrix actually used the name from the anime. THe meaning of gundam off wiki:
"In the early stages of production, there were numerous references to the word freedom, such as the White Base being originally named Freedom's Fortress, the Core Fighter as the Freedom Wing, and the Gunperry named the Freedom Cruiser. The collective Yadate team combined the English word Gun with last syllable of the word Freedom, Dom, to form the word Gundom. Tomino then changed the name to the current title Gundam, suggesting that the name Gundam signifies a power wielding a gun that is strong enough to hold back enemies like a dam holds back floods."

You are right... Gundam is big robotic body extensions. Thats a techinical way of looking at it. THey are really just a big robot with a human inside. Kinda like mech-warrior but much cooler with lasers and can fly and such.

Very interesting.  I remember seeing a company selling a functional gundam about months ago or so that had airsoft guns that shot the foam pellets.  Pretty neat stuff.

Mech warrior brings back memories of such a happier time :)

so.. that means you actually watched with proper attention the anime stuff he was watching... or you just couldn't stand him being immersed in the activity (and not into you)... i mention this because a friend of mine got a kick in the butt with that excuse... anyway, anime is just a tag for a collection of japanese animated productions... there's good, marvelous and really crappy stuff in that universe, just like in any form of culture/art...
i think that the animation -not only japanese, but also french, brithish, brazilian or from the US- gives the artist some resources that he may lack doing "live action" productions... and i don't think that special effects are always the answer to overcome reality limitations; the use of animation may sometimes be a huge boost to any story (e.g. the animated sequence on Kill Bill I)
hope you give anime and comics a chance  :)
