Metal sticks together in a vacuum

My dad was a big history buff and told me how old style welding worked.  The mating surfaces of the two parts are ground very flat.  Then they are tied together and wrapper in cloth.  The whole thing is buried.

I can't see that this is the same mechanism as that, but cool none the less.
