How has hurricane Katrina affected you?

So many people I know have been directly impacted or had family affected by Katrina. How did she impact you?
For me, the worst part has been the extremely high gas prices and, in fact, the lack of availability of gas.

Unfortunately this is about to seem very insensitive, but to tell the truth~ Hurricane Katrina hasn't really affected me at all. Reports say that the price of petrol here won't go up here for several weeks, if they will rise anymore for us at all.

understandable...
What is being said about it in the news where you are?
The situation has greatly improved since last week - the government figured out that it was supposed to do something rather than sit on it's ass on Friday.
The area that's been affected is so huge that almost everyone in the US knows or is related to someone who is affected.

My aunt and uncle lost their house and cars in the storm. They're staying with some relatives in Alabama now. They don't think their house will be covered by insurance, either

There seems to be a lot of that going around (on the insurance note)

Well it hasn't affected me personally really, but I do feel for those who have lost everything or anything at all and that is somewhat affecting me, being that I have wanted to donate and such a lot lately. So, I guess that could be considered "affecting me" as I am trying to help.
My heart goes out to anyone and everyone who lost somone or something.

We were getting quite alot of news coverage on it, but mostly in the spotlight was.. George Bush being called rasict and all the other bitching and complaining. So much of this political bs has come through....<see my rant for more information> But it is promising to hear all the good stories that have been coming up in the news about total strangers letting people affected by Katrina into their house for safety, for thye have lost everything.

The political BS, as you can imagine, is quite intense here. I really really do like hearing some of the good stories that have come out, like the 5 year old who took care of the kids. It really is incredible what people will do in times of adversity.
