Hobbies?
« on: August 20, 2005, 10:45:19 pm »
What hobbies does everyone have?

Mine is shooting.  I've been doing that for a few years now and I really enjoy it.

What kind of shooting? Do you believe it is ok to kill innocent animals for sport?  ???

I shoot paper targets, not animals.  I've never done so and don't intend to start either.

Anyway, I shoot with a pistol.

A lot of the world seems to have a vision of the US that we walk around shooting our guns for any reason. That's only in Texas :)
Certainly, the fact that I can legally carry a concealed firearm makes this place a lot different than most anywhere else, but from what I've seen, it works pretty well.  We don't have much, if any, crime by the people who are licensed to carry, as we are subjet to pretty throrough background checks.  So long as there are any guns around, I'd rather have the ability to keep a level playing field, because there are a lot of crazy people here.

There is a very strong argument that, because guns are available, even with scrict controls, ie: the availablity of stolen guns, increases the incidence of crime greatly. For example: how many shootings or school shootings do you hear about here in New Zealand? None- because no one has guns, so it's impossible for anyone stupid to get hold of one.

I do see what you mean and I actually agree with you and if I was in the same situation as you, I'd do exactly the same thing. I couldn't think of anything more important than protecting those whom you love- your family.

If the US were completely a gun free place, I wouldn't have a problem with not having a gun.  I would miss shooting, because it's fun, though.  But, because we have been so open about guns and the criminal underground has such a network to get guns, I don't think we could ever completely become gun free now.  Here, the places with the tightest gun control laws tend to have higher rates of gun involved crime.

I would be waay to scared to carry a gun.  Don't you worry about shooting someone on accident?

Not too much.  My main fears are that everyone around me realizes that I am carrying one and that I will use it at the appropriate time, if one ever presents itself.

I enjoy web design, basketball, acting, and just plain old relaxing in my free time. Oh, and listening to lots of music. :)

I'd be scared to own a gun too.  I'd worry that I'd end up shooting someone because they broke into my house or something got out of hand, etc.  No gun.  No body.  Works for me.  Like most Americans though I'm fine with gun ownership in general.

Hobbies... knitting, gardening, cooking, shootin' people (just kidding).

I bought a nice safe to keep my guns away from the kids.  I've pulled it once, but it turned out to be a woodpecker on my deck.  It sounded like someone was trying to cut through the wall of the house.

After I shot it many many many times, I became quite comfortable that I know the proper time to use it and not use it, as well as how to use it safely if I even have to shoot in anger.
