Do you think convicted sex offenders should be required to register with the local government after they get out of prison?

I think so.  On average, sex offenders are quite likely to commit crimes again.

So, does that mean our form of punishment (prison) is ineffective, or does it mean that we do not take the condition that the offenders have seriously, and let them out after a while?  Most murderers don't recommit murder after they get out.  Something is broken when we have to implement a system to keep track of people we strongly suspect are going to commit a serious crime after we're done "punishing" them.  Either make the punishment more severe or do something different.  One definition of insanity is doing the same thing time after time and expecting the results to change.

Here in NZ, once a Sex Offender has finished his/her jail sentence they get put on a Sex Offenders list. Reason for this list? Not too sure, as no one can look anyone up on it due to the privcy act. This reminds me of a case, where a local police officer told local households that this person was a Child Sex Offender who lived near a school. And he got dismissed from the force, for breaking privcy and protecting the local children.

I'm not sure how much of this particular issue makes it outside the US, but here we have public sex offender registries which are horribly inaccurate.  There have been countless cases where people in a community have burned down an offender's house or beat them up, only to find out it was bad information.

Even if it weren't bad information, when you are released from prison, your debt to society has been paid.  If it hasn't, then you should still be in prison.

The other thing that I don't like about these sex offender laws is that it's the same no matter what the circumstances of your crime where.  If you're 18 and you are busted for doing the tango with your 17 year old girl friend (statutory rape, here in the states), you are the same as the priest who repeatedly molests kids over the course of years.  It's not right.

The legal age here is 16, otherwise it is statutory rape. But i totally agree with you. Comparing horny teenagers to child molesters just isn't right

It's 16 in most states here, but somehow it's still illegal to have sex with someone under 18.

AMEN!  I do not agree with the sex offenders list.  I think in theory it is good, and I love anything that is trying to protect my kids, but... if the guy went to prison, by our laws, that should be it!  But no, he still suffers.  They might as well have kept him in prison (which isn't a bad idea imho). 

I think that alternative reform needs to be considered.  Like therapy instead of a cell with Bubba.  Now, I am sure Bubba is one mean tough guy, but not sure he is helping a sex offender out by being a sexual victim.

It's not directly related, but it kind of is... When I look at everything going on now (at least in the US), I see the plot of the book "1984" unfolding. 

No one in their right mind is going to stand up and defend sex offenders when they're going to have to run for re-election. 

No one in their right mind was going to oppose the patriot act after September 11th - who on earth would want to side with the terrorists, after all.

On a side note: FHM November edition reports that research conducted in 2000 shows the jails in Oklahoma have the most amount of homosexual activity, than anywhere.
