How does everyone over come stress?

I've been pretty stressed over the last week, with it being the last week of term with a million assignments to hand in, finding out my dad ended up in hospital after trying to kill himself and all the other stresses in life.... how do you remain sane and overcome all the stress that you have to deal with?

I'm really sorry to hear about your dad.  I hope he's okay and he can pull himself together.  That is really rough.

Here are a few things that I have found that helps me deal with stress:

1. Excruciatingly hard workouts.  It takes a while to work up to the point where you can really work out the stress, but when you get to that point, it is most helpful.
2. A scheduled quiet time or date night with your girlfriend.  Having an enjoyable "sure thing" (no, I don't mean sex, necessarily anyway) that you can look forward to helps a lot.
3. Find someone you can vent to.  I don't really having this, so I have to work extra hard at #1
4. Do some volunteering somewhere, even if it's not for a long time.  You'll feel good about yourself for helping other people, other people will respect you for helping other people (that feels good) and you'll realize that, even as bad as your situation is, other people have it much worse.

It sounds really obvious, but when I'm under a lot of stress with a lot of deadlines, I prioritize the list and work each one till it's done, then on to the next.  The trick is to focus and get into an assignment and block out all of the other assignments and things going on in your life.

Good luck to you.  We're here if you need to talk or vent.

Yeah I hope my Dad will be ok, I don't see him or hear from him very often as he lives on the other side of the city, it was just a bit of a shock. He doesn't exactly know that I know, a friend of his rang me but I'm seeing him tomorrow. Hopefully he'll pull himself together.

I do do #2, quite often just to relax~ go out on a nice date with my GF, or have a quiet time at home. I always find time for her and to relax but I find the hardest thing is finding time to do workouts, or volunteering or sometimes just to relax. I do prioritize my time, i have to. I have so much going on that things would fall apart if i didn't.

Some days I have to get up at 5 to get into uni, then in my only breaks I have to jump on the bus to go to work, then back to uni. I won't get home till like 10-11, to go straight to bed only to get up a few hours later to repeat the process. Juggling and prioritizing everything, with assignments and exams is really hard and is stressful in itself.

With the busyness of life, how do you find time to do these things to relax?
I'm always reminded of the quote from the matrix
"who has time? but then again how can we ever have time, if we don't ever make time"
Though this is easier said than done~ how do you make time?

This might sound juvnile, but I shop and buy myself presents.  I work very hard at a high-pressure job that I hate.  Buying stuff with the money I make is the only thing that makes me feel better about it.  Undecided

My wife calls that retail therapy.  She says it's cheaper than a shrink, but I'm not so sure...

Retail therapy is usually what I do, but I can't spend to much cos I don't get paid very well (see my rant for more details). And I get more stressed out by having no money

When my worry lies in the future, I live for today. When my worry is about today, I bear it while planning the future!  Wink

I sit down and analyse the situation and make myself think that it is easy. However, it rarely works lol Smiley i always end up being more stressed.

Always try to break it up into smaller issues that you can reasonably change, then go do it!
