So, to my un-educated ear, Bush's speech last seemed like the biggest social program since the Truman "New Deal".  I need to find some "official" analysis.

What was it about? (Sorry, I missed the news last night. Come to think of it, I've missed the news quite a few nights now... like actually most nights of the past few years!  Shocked )

Come on now, doesn't the world revolve around us?Huh
I guess not Sad

Anyway, Bush committed to the government paying the costs to rebuild the area (projected to be about $150,000,000,000USD).  It was quite controversial because he also said that he isn't going to raise taxes to pay for it.  Which means that we'll be deficit spending because we all know that we can't cut spending somewhere else!

I think eventually taxes are going to have to be raised because no one will part with their damn pet social projects.  But, the bad part is that I'm in the class that is going to be nailed.  I already pay enough taxes to well support a family.  I really need to find all of those "tax shelters" that people gripe about, because I'll tell you the obvious ones all dry up after a certain level.

We live in very strange times.  I was always raised that I couldn't spend money I didn't have.  So, it is very confusing to me when our government does just this.  It is just expected that we will rebuild New Orleans.  The USA as a whole cannot afford to rebuild a city that will eventually be tragically wiped out... yet again.  The USA needs to get realistic about it's spending habits.  We cannot continue indefinitely to spend beyond our means.  I see a fall coming our way, and boy is it going to be devastating.

Amen to that.  Get ready to witness the construction of the 7th wonder of the world - a dike & levy system around NOLA.
