I'm torn on this - I know plenty of people who take this despite the risk because it helps them so much.

Vioxx has been banned here in New Zealand, but we still have a ton of it around the house as we used to get it free. For casual usage, say you take one for a mirgane they work wonders with really no associated risk. Even if people take it everyday the benefits it has for people for example with Arthritis, out weigh the risk. Thats in my opinion though

My dad had been taking it for a long time and when all the trouble started for it, he stopped taking it and was miserable.  He decided he would rather use it and have a better life than live forever in pain.

From what I understand, jury found that Vioxx was not marketed properly.  Specifically, correct information was not provided to doctors or consumers.  Furthermore, marketing was deceptive and misleading.  If this was the case, then I believe that the verdict was right.  However, the amount of money awarded was kind of questionable for variety of reasons, IMO.

Good point.  They marketed the crap out of that drug.

There is no doubt that doctors need to make an intelligent decision.  There is no doubt that consumers need to make an intelligent decision.  Both need to be responsible, but it doesn't mean that companies have zero responsibility.  They need to be responsible and be held accountable.  But like I said, the amount of money awarded is a bit questionable.  Surely, one's life is priceless, but $250 million?  That's a lot of money.  Also does it ultimately help others (other patients who took Vioxx)?  I'm not so sure.
