I've been developing a piece of software for sometime now~ just as a home hobby. But I'm starting to reach a point, where the product is marketable in a commerical environment. How does someone market a new software product and get some exposure?

That depends on what the target audience is.  In general, though, the Internet has become a very cost effective marketing, sales & distribution channel.

But even with the internet, you can stick up a fancy site telling all about the product but people still won't find it

That's very true, but it's the first step.  Then you have to drum up some interest in it and get it recognized by search engines.  I'm not sure what audience it is for, but if you get active in forums related to the product you're looking to sell, the people there will be interested in your products.  What is the software, anyhow?

It's quite hard to explain without going into lots of details but it's a software package that controls surveillance cameras and equipment.

Aimed at small and medium business, the package is both a front end for administrative control and surveillance.

It has features, which can be easily setup to allow viewing and control via a secure online server on a web page, and state of the art motion detection.

The package is for small to medium businesses to run a surveillance system, without the expense of pricey equipment, but with features that rival them.

Sounds like a product that could do very well!

emphasising the "could" as how would i going about getting a product like this out there. It could do well, but how? And what should I do in getting people interested in the product. I know this isn't an easy answer and if i really wanted to know I'd do a major in marketing, but I just want to get a few ideas. Like should I be thinking about open-source?

Open source will certainly help with getting the package out there, but it does pull a lot of licensing revenue potential away.

BTW, is this something that a small business would look to set up themselves, or would they hire someone to implement it for them?  (keeping in mind the abilities of most small business owners)

It's aimed for small businesses to setup themselves, as it is pretty basic setup but contains lots of features you'd only see in highend setups.

I'm thinking about open source at the moment, at the moment the firm i am working for is setting up an open-source website (i'm doing the 3d graphics for it), but being involved in a project like this has shown me many benefits of open source. Definitely a revenue killer but having my name on a well used program could open up future career doors.

I definitely think there is money to be made if you open source it, through support contracts or the like.  And, it does get your name out in the public, which is a very good thing for your careeer.
